Bar Bending Schedule: How It Prevents Rebar Waste on UAE Projects
Rebar is one of the largest material cost items on any reinforced concrete project. It is also one of the most commonly wasted. Offcuts that do not fit, bars cut to the wrong length, material ordered without knowing actual quantities – these are not unusual occurrences on UAE construction sites. A Bar Bending Schedule (BBS) prepared before procurement begins eliminates most of this waste. This article explains how.
What Is a Bar Bending Schedule?
A Bar Bending Schedule is a detailed list of every rebar element required for a structure – specifying the bar mark, diameter, shape code, number of bars, and the dimensions needed to cut and bend each bar to the exact shape shown in the structural drawings. It is prepared from the reinforcement drawings produced by the structural engineer and forms the basis for ordering steel from the supplier and directing the bar-bending yard.
What a BBS Contains
A complete Bar Bending Schedule includes:
- Element reference: Which structural element each bar belongs to (F1 footing, C2 column, B3 beam, S1 slab)
- Bar mark: A unique identifier for each bar shape in the element
- Bar diameter: T10, T12, T16, T20, T25, T32 etc. (high yield deformed bars)
- Shape code: Standard bending code from BS 8666 or ACI 318 defining the bar shape
- Dimensions: Length of each leg of the bar after bending, in millimetres
- Number required: How many bars of this mark are in the element
- Total length: Total bar length per mark and per diameter
- Weight: Total weight per diameter, for ordering purposes
How a BBS Prevents Rebar Waste
Accurate Ordering – No Over-Purchasing
Without a BBS, site engineers typically order rebar based on a rough estimate from the structural drawings – and they order more than needed to avoid running short mid-pour. The result is purchased material sitting on site that becomes either waste or an argument about who owns it at project end. A BBS gives you the exact quantity of each diameter required for each element. You order what you need.
Cut and Bend Optimisation
Steel comes from the mill in standard lengths – typically 12 metres. The way bars are cut from these lengths determines how much scrap you produce. A BBS allows the bar-bending yard to optimise cut patterns across multiple bar marks, minimising the offcut waste from each standard length. Without a BBS, the yard cuts each bar independently – and the scrap pile grows.
Fewer Site Errors
When site steel fixers work from a BBS rather than directly from reinforcement drawings, they have a simple, element-by-element reference that tells them exactly what shape and how many bars are needed. Bars placed incorrectly because the site team misread a complex reinforcement drawing are a major source of rework on UAE construction sites.

Valuing rebar for a progress certificate requires knowing how much has been placed. A BBS with quantities per element lets you and your consultant calculate the value of completed reinforcement work quickly and accurately – speeding up your cash flow.
Typical Rebar Savings

On a project with AED 500,000 in rebar value, that is AED 25,000 – 45,000 in material savings – significantly more than the cost of the BBS itself.
Who Prepares the BBS?
The BBS is prepared by a technical office or quantity surveyor, working from the structural reinforcement drawings. It requires careful reading of every drawing, correct interpretation of shape codes, and accurate dimension extraction. Errors in the BBS translate directly to bars cut to the wrong dimensions – which have to be scrapped or bent back.
